Located in the Bispebjerg, a suburb of Copenhagen, Grundtvig’s Church stands as a rare monument to expressionist church architecture as well as monolithic brick construction. With the foundation stones laid at the end of the First World War, the church took craftsmen over 19 years to build while the construction straddled the interwar period. Composed of over 6 million bricks, the interior bricks were individually scraped to exemplify the way light dapples across their surface and bounces around the knave. Today the building serves the Church of Denmark, a denomination of the Protestant Church.
